The Historical Diving Society returned to Santa Barbara to celebrate a quarter of a century of diving history.
The HDS celebrated its 25th anniversary at the location of its inaugural meeting, Santa Barbara City College, on September 23rd, 2017. Speakers included Chris Swann on Divcon and Deep-water Helium Diving, Ed LaRochelle on Sea Net Manufacturing Company, Leslie Leaney on Hans Hass, Sid Macken on E. R. Fenimore Johnson, and Nyle Monday on Gunner George Stillson and the Development of Diving in the U.S. Navy. The event was sponsored by Nautilus Explorer, Global Diving and Salvage, Flashback Scuba, Subsea Archives & Antiques, Kirby Morgan Dive Systems, James Caldwell, Lad Handelman, Mike Hughes, and Jim Nelson. A banquet was held for a packed house at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum with Zale Parry as the keynote speaker.
50th Anniversaries celebrated by three organizations
Diving education and safety have been the mission of these organizations for a half century.
Between them, Santa Barbara City College Marine Diving Technology (State college program), Divers Institute of Technology (a privately owned diver training school),and The Association of Diving Contractors, International (commercial diving's , have served the commercial diving industry for a cumulative 150 years. They each celebrate their 50th Anniversaries in 2018.
